JANUARY FOOD PICKS

It is important to start the year correctly and we want to help you in every way we can! That’s why we are highlighting the best foods to consume in the month of January. Eating seasonally has more benefits than you may think! Firstly, the health benefits are particularly impressive: foods in season provide the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are required by our bodies at specific times of the year. For example, foods high in Vitamin C should be consumed during the winter months to help boost our immune system. Another benefit of eating in season is that it can be more sustainable and cost-effective as fruits and vegetables are sold more cheaply when in season. Take a look at our January picks!

Carrots
Well-known for their ‘special’ ability to help us see in the dark, carrots are a popular January produce. Although the ‘see in the dark’ thing is a myth, carrots are high in a nutrient called beta carotene, which is in fact beneficial for eye health. There is some truth behind this myth after all! Apart from being important for eye health, beta carotene is also an aid of healthy skin, as well as our immune system. Additionally, carrots are particularly high in antioxidants, empowering carrots as strong fighters against heart disease and cancer!

Apples
This popular fruit is arguably in season during both the autumn months as well as the winter months. We have chosen apples as one of our January picks due to its high fibre content. Many of us tend to want to restart in January and the high fibre content in apples is perfect for this, aiding the function of the digestive system. Apples are also rich in Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. This particular vitamin is essential for the development and repair of all body tissues. It is also important for the function of our immune system, helping to fight those winter colds.

Red Cabbage
This cruciferous vegetable is known for boosting gut health and preventing constipation, something we all need in January. Nevertheless, these are just some of the health benefits that red cabbage can provide. Full of a range of nutrients, including iron, manganese and vitamins A, C and K, the red cabbage really is a vegetable we should be eating more often. In terms of antioxidants, red cabbage is king. It contains the rare antioxidant, anthocyanins, found mainly in purple-coloured foods. Anthocyanins are renowned for improving memory, so if you can’t remember new year’s eve, not to worry, the red cabbage will help to recall those memories! Each month we'll be featuring our top food picks of in season produce for the month ahead so keep checking back!
