WHY DO WE ALWAYS CRAVE MORE CHOCOLATE?
Whilst there is nothing wrong with indulging in a chocolate treat, especially over the recent Easter holidays, it’s important to understand the effects that refined sugar such as chocolate has on the body. This may make you think twice about going back for more and enjoy chocolate sensibly without comprising our long-term goals.
So why do we always want more?
1. When we eat chocolate, the sugar is rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream, causing a blood sugar spike. This gives us a temporary ‘good feeling’.
2. The pancreas pumps the hormone insulin into the blood in attempt to bring blood sugar back to the proper range.
3. Due to the high amount of sugar, the pancreas overestimate how much insulin to pump into the blood. The result: too much sugar is removed from the blood, causing blood sugar to crash.
4. This causes energy levels to crash and craving to increase, which often leads to us reaching for more chocolate or other sugary foods to feel better. This blood sugar rollercoaster continues until you remove refined carbs and replace them with wholegrains.
There are a number of things that you can do if you are attempting to stay on track to your goals but need a little sweetness in your life.
Swap milk chocolate for dark!
Whilst dark chocolate should still be eaten in moderation, due to it’s antioxidant content it can provide us with many benefits.
- Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease
- Mood enhancer
- Increases alertness
- Improves cognitive function
Unfortunately for those milk chocolate lovers these benefits do not apply to Dairy Milk or Malteasers. The darker the chocolate the less sugar and more antioxidants, so aim for 80% cocoa and above. Swap your chocolate fix for a chocolate protein shake
The Chocolate Slender Blend is low in calories and sugar and will still satisfy your sweet tooth! You can drink it as a shake, turn it into an ice cream by mixing with fat free greek yoghurt and freezing or add to other ingredients to make a tasty smoothie. It’s also high in protein which will help to keep you feeling more full for longer and steer away cravings.
